About

University Cinema Scala is a venue with a century-long history of cinematic tradition. The latest era of the cinema is created by Masaryk University and Aeropolis, who together provide a continuous programme of film productions all year long. Masaryk University uses the cinema mainly for professional activities, while Aeropolis provides evening screenings for the public. University Cinema Scala serves students, academics as well as the general public.

As of 30 June 2023, the cinema hall was closed due to unsatisfactory statics. The café and foyer area is not affected by the structural problem. A detailed structural and diagnostic survey of the building will be carried out in 2024. The results of the survey will be known during 2024. The owner of the building (the City of Brno) will decide what to do with the building based on the results. Our goal is to maintain the cultural and educational operation.

Outdoor cinema
This summer, it's going to be wild!

The Scalní summer cinema will take place on two new stages - on the rear terrace of the Janáček Theatre (Scalní Summer Cinema: Janáček) and in the courtyard of the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University (Scalní Summer Cinema: Filda).

The programming of screenings on both stages is adjusted to the atmosphere of outdoor projections, but still corresponds to the program line that Scala has been presenting for a long time. Therefore, the audience can look forward to quality films not only from the European territory but also from other world cinemas.

Scala cinema, originally called Bio Dopz (short for Society of trade and industrial workers/Družstvo obchodních a průmyslových zaměstnanců), was opened on 28th December 1929 and held 800 seats. In 1931, the number of seats increased to 1,012, and the name was changed to Bio Scala. In 1945, after the German occupation, the cinema was renamed again, this time to Cinema Moscow and the number of seats was reduced to 478.

During the 1980s, Cinema Moscow was the most modern cinema in Brno. In the meantime, the cinema sound system was upgraded with Dolby Stereo SR. After the Velvet Revolution, the cinema was renamed back to Scala Cinema. The number of visitors was on the decline with the rise of multiplex cinemas. On 22nd December 2011 Cinema Scala stopped functioning as a city cinema with morning screenings for schools. A new cinema operator was needed to run it.

The cinema was reopened in 2013 by Masaryk University in cooperation with Aeropolis s.r.o., which provides film productions running all year long. On 14th October 2013, viewers returned back to the cinema after a period of almost two years.

Masaryk University, which leased Scala from the city after its closure, uses it for its professional activities. The University Cinema Scala is once again becoming a meeting place for students, academics and all those who live, work, study or just visit Brno. The cinema is now used for teaching, conferences, seminars and academic ceremonies of Masaryk University.

Students of Masaryk University are actively involved in the creation of the cinema's programme within the Student Cinema project. Regular screenings combined with lectures, talks and other activities are an integral part of the cinema programme. Specific educational courses are prepared for Scala by the Faculty of Arts of MU and the University of the Third Age of MU.
