A witty account of the traumas of growing up gay in a New Zealand farming community in 1975. Billy, an overweight 13-year-old boy (who dreams of being Lana, the star of his favourite sci-fi television programme) and Lou, his older rugby-playing tomboy cousin are inseparable. Lou and Billy's idyllic friendship is put under strain by the appearance of a handsome farmhand to whom they are both drawn. A new boy at school, Roy, is an awkward sensitive artist, nicknamed 'The Freak', but Billy finds himself drawn to him as well. The acting from all of the principals is universally excellent but Billy (Andrew Paterson) is a real star.
