This film is an adaptation of a play by Henrik Ibsen and is set in a small town in Bengal. Dr. Ashok Gupta is the head of a town hospital. Dr. Gupta is convinced that the holy water of the temple is contaminated due to faulty pipe-laying. He believes this contamination is causing an epidemic in the town and is determined to take action. But Gupta’s concern meets with scorn, when he shares his suspicions with his brother who sits on committees that run both the hospital and a local temple.
