Alzbeta Bathory has been for years presented as the biggest murderess of all times who used to bath in blood of young virgins. Her life story interests historians even now, 400 years after her death. One of the most prominent Czecho-Slovakian directors Juraj Jakubisko tried to look at this legend from a different point of view. What if Alzbeta was just a victim of those who had plotted against her to gain her property? This film balances between a story of love to the famous Italian painter Caravaggio, political machination and sweeping battle scenes where the director as always confirms his undoubtable sense of art.
