Depressed single mom Adele and her son Henry offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited.
Adele (Kate Winslet) had been abandoned by her husband and she has never recovered from that. Instead of caring for her thirteen year old son Henry, he has to take care of her. The collapse of marriage enhanced her closure and therefore she avoids contact with the environment. Only exceptions are regular trips for food stocks to the local supermarket. Here she meets with Frank (Josh Brolin), who asks her for help. Frank just escaped from prison, was injured during the escape, and therefore seeks for temporary shelter. Terrified Adele takes him home and try to comply anything he asks to protect her son Henry. However, it reveals that the rough-skinned criminals is hiding a tragic story of a guy who would not hurt a fly and he gradually starts to show his personal true face to Adele. The woman who subconsciously planned that the rest of her life will live in despair, suddenly felt a flicker of happiness, hope and love. She realizes that Frank is person she can rely on, eventhough it is a criminal on the run. The question is whether they can hold the relationship for more than a long weekend at the end of the summer.
